Post Date:12/14/2017 4:20 PM

At the Town Council meeting on Wednesday, December 13th, Vice Mayor John Richards was appointed mayor and Councilmember Ann Wengert was appointed vice mayor for 2018.  Outgoing Mayor Craig Hughes and Councilmembers Maryann Derwin and Jeff Aalfs will continue to serve on the Town Council in 2018.

Mayor Hughes, in his address to the Town Council, highlighted the Town’s top accomplishments during his tenure, which included:

  • Portola Valley becoming one of the first municipalities in the United States to default to providing its residents 100% clean, renewable power.
  • Approval of Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras and ALPR policies; 31 new neighborhood watch groups established; new design guidelines to support home safety.
  • Focus on housing, including a review of the Town’s property for housing possibilities, and new Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance to help with affordable housing for our teachers, firefighters, sheriff deputies, town employees, and everyone else who works in Portola Valley but experience increasing trouble affording to live anywhere nearby.
  • The hire of a Communications and Sustainability Management Analyst in order for the Town to better communicate with the community, increase volunteerism in the Town and help the Town be more responsive to resident’s needs.
  • Adoption of a robust budget that exemplifies the Town’s fiscal health.

In 2018, the Town of Portola Valley looks forward to completing existing projects, undertaking new initiatives, and adding to the list of accomplishments under the leadership of Mayor John Richards and the Town Council.
