Sponsored by the Nature & Science Committee, Fun with Pi is the first of a three-part series of free workshops held at the Historic Schoolhouse. This math workshop will focus on Pi, the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of every circle.
This workshop will be conducted by George Comstock and Paul Heiple, two Portola Valley residents with lifelong interests in math. Pi (3.14159...) has been known for thousands of years, the longest history of the three Mystical, Magical, or Transcendental numbers explored in this series. Fun With Pi will include history, demonstrations, exercises, and explorations with plenty of time for participation. Come to get acquainted or re-acquainted with some of Pi’s many interesting aspects, and bring along a scratch pad and a hand-held calculator. We will be delighted to have you with us!
We hope this will be an enjoyable experience for people from 7th grade through the elderly who are intrigued by lesser known, but not highly technical, aspects of numbers.
Subsequent workshops will be held at 7:30 in the Historic Schoolhouse:
- e, the “growth” number first discovered in the 1500’s during a study of compound interest (February 28)
- i, the completely imaginary number we can’t even write down as a number that links with the other two in a totally surprising way (March 28)
For additional information on this three-part series, please read the news article Fun With Figures. If you have questions, please email George Comstock.
