Living in Mountain Lion Country

Meet wildlife ecologist, and head of the “Santa Cruz Puma Project,” Chris Wilmers.  Professor Wilmers will talk about his research on the behavior of mountain lions (pumas), including how pumas affect other wildlife and respond to human activity.  He will address safety concerns that arise from sharing the environment with pumas.

Using sophisticated tracking collars to monitor where pumas are and what they are doing, the Santa Cruz Puma Project answers questions such as how large a puma’s territory is, how a puma uses its territory, how pumas help maintain healthy ecosystems, and how pumas respond to fragmentation of their habitat by roads, houses, and other aspects of human development.  Wilmers’ research is aiding conservation and land management, such as guiding the placement of wildlife crossing structures across major freeways, in order to help us sustainably share habitat with these great cats.
