Geology Day - this Saturday at Town Center

P.V. TOWN CENTER

GEOLOGY DAY

SATURDAY, MAY 13th

10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

The Nature and Science Committee of the Town of Portola Valley will be hosting Geology Day on Saturday, May 13 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. There will be displays set up in the Community Hall on rocks and minerals, including fossils, geodes, and crystals. Have a rock you are curious about? Bring it for a geologist's viewpoint. Explore materials demonstrating geologic events such as earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. CERRP will be there to give you pointers on how to stay safe when the earth moves.

SPEAKERS
You will have the opportunity to hear knowledgeable speakers in the Buckeye activity room. Geologists Sheldon Breiner will speak on earthquakes and Chet Wrucke on our local geology and the story of the 1906 earthquake in Portola Valley. Tom Bleier will introduce some groundbreaking innovations in the science of earthquake prediction. Paul Heiple will share his experience as a petroleum geologist to bring us up to date on oil shales and tracking.

  • Chet Wrucke on Portola Valley geology – 12:00 pm
  • Tom Bleier on earthquake prediction – 12:50 pm
