Special Planning Commission

Stanford Wedge Housing Project – Notice of Preparation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and Notice of EIR Scoping Meeting

The Town is holding a special Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at 7:00 pm in the Historic Schoolhouse to discuss the scope of the environmental review, and its accompanying report (EIR), for the proposed Stanford Wedge Housing Project. Please visit www.portolavalley.net/projects for additional information.

At this time, the Town is seeking comments on the scope of the EIR from residents and interested agencies. Later in the process, a Draft EIR will be released with additional opportunities to provide comments on the full draft document.

The January 30th meeting will not be on the merits of the project in general. Instead, it will be focused on just the scope of the project’s environmental review. Future Commission and Committee meetings later in the process will be scheduled to review the overall project. Residents are invited to attend and participate in all public meetings. Additional information about the project and upcoming meetings will be posted on the Town’s website as they become available.

Brief Background: Stanford University has submitted an application to the Town of Portola Valley to develop a portion of University property often referred to as the “Stanford Wedge.”  They propose to develop 27 single-family residences for Stanford faculty and 12 affordable multifamily housing units. Approximately 7.4 acres would be developed and the remainder of the 75-acre site would be preserved as open space. The proposed development would be clustered on a small portion of the property along Alpine Road, which is the flattest portion of the site.

The Town is preparing an EIR for compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The purpose of an EIR is to inform decision makers and the general public about the environmental effects of the proposed project.
